Daydream Inc. turns ghost stories into a supply chain. Its field explorers enter the Darkness, collect Dream Essence and build survival manuals, while the company offers money, equipment and the possibility of a wish.
01Company profile
백일몽 주식회사, usually rendered here as Daydream Inc., is Kim Soleum's employer at the beginning of the story. Kakao's official introduction places him in its Field Exploration Team: employees investigate urban ghost stories and work out the hidden rules that become survival manuals.
The English fan reference describes a pharmaceutical business with another operation behind it. What the public sees as a medicine company depends on resources taken from supernatural encounters. A successful expedition therefore produces something the business can use, alongside information about the danger.
02Dream Essence and the wish economy
The resource is 꿈결, called Dream Essence in the English fan sources. The author explicitly connects its collection with the manufacture of wish-granting potions in Kakao's series introduction. The supernatural product is part of the company's purpose, rather than a reward unrelated to its fieldwork.
The fan company guide describes money and the opportunity to earn a Wish Ticket as major reasons employees remain. For Soleum, that possibility becomes a route he hopes will take him home. His goal gives each assignment a personal stake: the job he wants to escape appears to offer the means of escaping his situation.
03Recruitment: orientation is already fieldwork
New recruits do not begin with a safe demonstration. The company reference describes an orientation inside a lethal ghost story, where survival and a person's contribution to escape determine whether they obtain a place. The familiar language of hiring and assessment conceals an immediate selection process with fatal consequences.
Welcome to Abyss Transpo supplies the opening example. Recruits find themselves aboard a moving subway with station announcements and destinations that do not belong to an ordinary commute. The fan case page records changing themes across encounters, so the subway is already a lesson in the limits of memorizing an earlier visit.
04Field Exploration: department, squad and rank
The Field Exploration Team is the larger unit; D Squad is one group within it. In the early organization described by the fan references, A through C are elite squads, D through W are regular squads, and X through Z are the Round-Off squads. A squad letter identifies an organizational position, not a ghost story's grade.
Treatment follows that hierarchy. Elite explorers receive preferential treatment and gold markings on their masks. Round-Off personnel are placed in especially expendable roles, including experimental work. These are the opening arrangements described by the references, rather than a claim that every squad retains the same status throughout the novel.
05D Squad: the first workplace
Soleum joins a team with an existing chain of command. Lee Jaheon, associated with the lizard mask, is its section chief and leader. Eun Haje is the assistant manager with the falcon mask; Park Minseong is the supervisor with the badger mask. Soleum's field identity is Roe Deer.
Lee Jaheon's character reference emphasizes literal speech, formidable physical strength and responsibility toward his team. It also describes an important limit to reading him: a short answer may require a precise follow-up question. D Squad's interpersonal habits matter because a field team must communicate under pressure, not merely assemble people with useful abilities.
06Why the explorers wear masks
Animal masks and codenames protect field identities. The Korean company guide associates mask themes with recruitment years. A shared theme can identify batchmates without making them members of the same squad.
The Korean organization reference adds that some phenomena attack through personal information, and describes a perception-disrupting effect on people outside the company. The mask belongs to the setting's protective equipment as well as its office hierarchy. It does not mean every person concealed behind one has the same powers or allegiance.
07Equipment and the employee welfare mall
The fan item register distinguishes field-team equipment, welfare-mall potions and custom tools. Its company list includes the Dream Essence Collector, a synthesizer, field masks, regeneration and detection potions, and the Wish Ticket Potion. These objects connect extraction, survival and compensation within the same workplace.
Custom equipment gives that system a personal dimension. Lee Jaheon's butter knife and Eun Haje's communication equipment are examples in the item register; his character page also places Soleum's first custom-equipment work early in his employment. An item's appearance alone tells little about its function. The useful questions are what it does, who can use it, and which encounter established those limits.
08How an expedition becomes a manual
The publisher makes manual-building central to the premise. The Korean company reference describes an especially grim information channel: collectors can return with recordings after an explorer dies. Some instructions are therefore the surviving work of people who did not return themselves.
Abyss Transpo's case reference is organized around multiple expeditions and irregular escapes. Read that structure as accumulated observations with a history. Our editorial reading is that a useful manual preserves the circumstances of a result: which visit, what changed, and whether the rule was observed directly. A confident instruction with its context removed can conceal how little the explorers actually know.
09Darkness, grades and contamination
Daydream calls the phenomena it handles Darkness. The fan setting register includes haunted objects, entities and abnormal spaces, and organizes company cases using letter grades and Qterw identifiers. Its warnings about changing encounters matter: a catalog entry describes a phenomenon, but cannot promise that its next manifestation will match an earlier one.
Contamination is another form of danger. The same reference describes people becoming psychologically or physically altered by a ghost story, sometimes losing their sense of self. Escaping a location and recovering from its influence are separate problems. That distinction explains why the archive needs to track effects on people alongside routes through places.
10The office has its own ghost stories
Hello Traffic Info brings the supernatural directly onto D Squad's office furniture. The case reference describes a radio that offers fortunes and unsettling advice in the form of traffic reports. It is associated with Park Minseong's assigned Darkness and appears when Soleum first meets the squad.
This gives the opening office a particular texture. A device resting near the desks can be company property, an employee responsibility and an active phenomenon at once. In our reading, the mundane presentation makes the work more unsettling: the staff have everyday routines around something a newcomer still has to learn how to understand.
11A routine is not ownership
The television case offers a different relationship. The fan reference describes the Tuesday Quiz Show as a supernatural program used by Daydream and controlled by its host, Braun. Repeated expeditions establish a routine, but the program can change and invalidate what employees expect from a familiar assignment.
That distinction is essential when following company operations. Daydream's use of a ghost story, an entry in its catalog, and authority over the entity inside it are different claims. Our reading of the television setup is that operational familiarity encourages confidence while the host retains interests of his own. The company can organize an expedition without having the final say over the show.
12The Bureau: another purpose for fieldwork
The Supernatural Disaster Management Bureau is a separate government organization. Its fan reference describes investigating paranormal events, responding to trapped civilians and seeking ways to end ghost stories. Those duties create a different relationship with the same phenomena Daydream uses as resources.
The Bureau also uses its own classification language. Its sanction labels should be read in their own institutional context rather than converted into Daydream's letter grades. Comparing the organizations is most useful at the level of an assignment: what is being collected or investigated, who needs help, and what outcome each institution wants. Neither name alone explains every employee's decision.
13Reader theory: why keep working if wishes exist?
A September 2026 Reddit discussion asks why the company does not simply use wish-making to remove all of its problems. Replies dispute the premise, pointing to resources, eligibility and the difference between a benefit for an individual and an outcome for the company. This is a reader debate, not independent verification of every restriction discussed there.
The question is useful even without accepting a theory. Our interpretation is that the promise of a wish makes the employment system more persuasive: an ordinary wage has limits, while a deeply personal wish can feel beyond price. When reading a scene, separate what management promises, what a worker hopes for, and what the story has actually demonstrated. Those three forms of evidence need not agree.

Follow Abyss Transportation for recruitment, Make a Choice for D Squad's early assessment of Soleum, and Hello Traffic Info for the office's daily contact with Darkness. The television record develops the question of company use versus an entity's control. Return to Soleum's profile for the personal goal that connects these assignments.
