Original fiction for this archive, separate from the novel's canon. A sound restorer receives a recording of an empty room. Every noise she removes from the tape disappears from the building around her.

01Material received

The parcel delivered to Orison Audio contained a single reel and a request to clean up the room tone. No speech, no music, just two minutes of the low, ordinary noise a room makes when everyone has stopped talking. The return address named a studio that had closed before the technician, Mara Venn, was born.

At first the work was uneventful. Venn removed the electrical hum, then a faint ticking behind it. The wall clock stopped. Its second hand continued to move, but the small sound she had ignored for years was gone. In the corridor, a courier dropped a metal case. Venn saw his mouth open before she realized she had removed that sound as well.

She restored the original file. The clock resumed ticking. The courier's case clattered against a floor he was no longer standing on. Only then did she listen through the entire reel. At the end, someone on the recording drew a breath.

02Restoration note

Venn isolated the breath and heard her mother say her childhood name. Her mother was alive, three towns away, and answered the telephone on the first ring. She said she had spent the afternoon trying to remember what she had wanted to tell her daughter. As the tape continued, the connection filled with the sound of rain, although neither town had seen any.

The final thirty seconds contain a chair moving, a door opening and several people greeting someone who has arrived. Venn recognizes every voice. None of the speakers has ever visited the studio.

She has left those seconds untouched. During the day, the reel stays in its cardboard box. After closing, she leaves the studio door unlocked for the length of the recording, then checks that every room is still empty.
